The Babcock University Medical Journal (BUMJ) invites applications for the position of Editorial Assistant. This role is central to the efficient management of our peer-review and publication workflow and offers an excellent opportunity for early-career academics or publishing professionals seeking hands-on experience in scholarly publishing.

 

Position Title: Editorial Assistant

Location: Department of Community Medicine, Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State
Commitment: Contract (renewable annually based on satisfactory performance)

 

Key Responsibilities

The Editorial Assistant will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors to ensure the timely, high-quality processing of all manuscripts. Core responsibilities include:

Manuscript Management

  • Conduct initial manuscript assessment for scope, formatting compliance, plagiarism screening, and completeness.
  • Prepare submissions for peer review and manage workflow within the online journal system (OJS).

Copyediting, Typesetting & Production

  • Perform professional copyediting for language, style, and journal consistency.
  • Coordinate typesetting and layout of accepted manuscripts.
  • Prepare final publication files and assist with issue compilation.

Communications & Workflow Coordination

  • Send reminders and correspondence to authors, reviewers, and associate editors.
  • Track deadlines and ensure timely progression of manuscripts through each stage of review and production.
  • Maintain accurate editorial records and reports.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum); postgraduate training in health sciences, biomedical sciences, public health, or related fields is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent command of written English and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with academic publishing and peer-review processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with Open Journal Systems (OJS) is an advantage.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple manuscripts concurrently.

 

Desirable Attributes

  • Prior experience in journal editorial work, academic editing, or publishing.
  • Knowledge of publication ethics and reporting guidelines (ICMJE, COPE, PRISMA, CONSORT, etc.).
  • Professionalism, discretion, and reliability in handling confidential material.
